Macular Degeneration is a chronic eye disease that affects the center of your vision, causing difficulty with reading, driving and even facial recognition. It is also the leading cause of blindness for ages 60 or older in the United States. There are two stages of the disease:
There is progressive deterioration of several retinal layers that typically results in difficulty with reading. Usually it progresses slowly and very rarely causes blindness.
There is fast loss of central vision associated with bleeding and/or fluid accumulation in the central part of the retina. This requires prompt diagnosis and treatment.
Eye Specialty Group uses the latest in diagnostic equipment such as the OCT (optical coherence tomography) and fluorescein angiography to determine the best approach for treating macular degeneration. In fact, recent advances in drug and laser therapy are even helping some patients restore lost vision!
